ESSENTIALS YOU NEED FOR AN OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT IN YOUR BACKYARD OR ON YOUR ROOF

Whether it’s a block party or an intimate night out, there’s something dreamy about watching a movie under the stars. It takes a little preparation and some purchasing power to lay the groundwork for your first exam, but it is a worthwhile investment of time and money. You’ll want a projector powerful enough to shine through the light pollution in your neighborhood and, of course, a movie theater. Depending on the capabilities of your projector, you may need to add sound and speakers, too.

Even if you project on a flat wall, fence, or bed sheet, there’s no doubt about it – you’ll get high-quality images through the screen. First, check your facility’s accessibility to a power source to decide whether you need an inflatable or retractable screen. Then find out where you will be sitting, so that you know how to adjust the screen. For example, an inflatable screen needs a power source for its fan and logs of grass or dirt to support it.

Once you’ve figured out the technical angles, add comfort features so you and your guests can sit through a two-hour movie without backaches or bug attacks. Think about who is in your audience when considering seating. Adults will need supportive beach chairs or outdoor chairs, while children can get comfortable on the floor with blankets and pillows.

Keep the citronella burning to deter mosquitoes, and turn on a few outdoor lights so guests can get up and move comfortably. Of course, no movie theater is complete without a contract. Load popcorn and snacks, and keep your drinks handy and cold in airtight coolers and cups.

From ready-made to DIYs, you have plenty of options to create your perfect backyard movie night  at home. We’ve selected our favorites to make it easy to start your exploration under the stars.

First things first: You’ll need a projector, and since you’re outdoors, a portable option is your best bet. The Anker o Nebula Capsule is our tech editor Brandon Carte picks for the best affordable option. It has all the qualities you need for an outdoor theater.

With a 100 ANSI lumens bulb and 854-by-480 resolution, video quality will be excellent at night on screens up to 100 inches. If your Wi-Fi doesn’t connect while browsing, you can connect the device via HDMI or USB ports.

It has a nice built-in speaker, manual controls and a 3 to 4 hour charging window.Even more amazing, the size of a soda can!
Go for an inflatable screen if you have access to a nearby power source and want to be able to store it in a small space. When covered with the included fan, this screen is 12 feet wide with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Note that the fan will need to run the entire time you have the screen on, but reviewers say it is just as noisy as a standard box fan. This one is best for grass or dirt areas as it comes with a set of sticks and clips to keep it down, much like a tent.
